Lock Identification.

Help me to help you.

In order for me to help you, the customer, it would be help-full if you could identify the type of lock you have fitted to your doors. This would then mean that I can give a more accurate verbal quote over the phone.

The different lock types.

One of the most common locks was the standard Yale lock fitted generally to wooden doors, the cylinder was fitted through the door, with the latch fitted to the internal surface of the door. The cylinder of which is shown to the top left.

The double euro cylinder is shown to the top right. These are fitted to UPVC doors and come in a variety of lengths and levels of security. The euro can also be fitted to wooden doors in conjunction with a mortice case. The cylinder can also be operated by a thumb turn on the inside or in some cases it can be just a single euro cylinder.

The double oval cylinder is relatively rare in comparison to the euro though some older aluminium doors still use them. They are more common on commercial premises. They are also available with a thumb turn and as a single oval cylinder. The cylinder is shown to the middle right.

Also shown to the left are screw in cylinders and to the right, Scandinavian ovals used on aluminium doors for shops and other commercial premises.

The mortice sash lock generally used on wooden doors. It is available as a deadlock, i.e. without handles, and as 2 lever, 3 lever, 5 lever, 6 lever and 7 lever. The 2 & 3 lever versions are recommended only for internal or low risk areas. The minimum that should be fitted to an external door is a 5 lever lock. There is no real need to go to 6 or 7 levers as your average burglar will not attempt to pick or drill your lock.

BS locks - Insurance approved

All insurance companies have a minimum level of security requirements for most buildings and if when quoting the building does not meet these requirements than a higher premium is paid by you, the customer.

Your insurance company will normally ask you what locks you have on your front door, rear door, patio door extra and will specify a BS mortice lock. This is fine for wooden or composite doors but for UPVC doors they are happy with multi point locks as long as they have any of the following, hook bolts, linear bolts and deadbolts. If your lock only has mushroom pins then you may pay a higher rate. Though with the advent of lock bumping over 90% of insurance companies will not pay out on insurance claims if this happens to your lock. Lock bumping is a non destructive method of entry via cylinder locks.
